OIC chief and Pakistani FM discuss upcoming meeting about Afghanistan 

ISLAMABAD: Hissein Brahim Taha, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the minister of foreign affairs of Pakistan, met in Islamabad on Friday, ahead of an OIC meeting in the city on Sunday about the situation in Afghanistan.

They discussed the final preparations and arrangements for the 17th extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, along with a number of other issues of common interest.

Taha expressed his deep appreciation to the government of Pakistan for its generosity in hosting the conference. He also praised the important role played by Pakistan as a founding member of the OIC, including its continuous support for the organization and its contribution to enhancing joint Islamic action among member states.

Qureshi congratulated the secretary-general on assuming office at the OIC General Secretariat, commended the organization for its efforts to enhance Islamic solidarity, and assured Taha of Pakistan’s support. He also thanked the OIC General Secretariat, under the leadership of Taha, for its excellent preparations and arrangements for the meeting about Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the OIC welcomed Saudi Arabia’s announcement of a major relief operation to assist the Afghan people, as the first four planes carrying aid from the Kingdom reached the country.
